The global fast-food chain has pulled a holiday commercial produced with Artificial Intelligence after encountering considerable online backlash.

The brief spot was produced using generative AI clips and was originally uploaded on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Audience Response and Decision to Pull

Soon after it aired, audiences online denounced the use of AI in the film. A number of described it as "creepy" and "poorly edited".

"This incident represents an key learning as we investigate the appropriate utilization of generative technology," said a spokesperson from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was developed for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It showed a series of situations that might go awry over the festive season, using the slogan "the most terrible time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI Commercials

Commercials that include AI-created content have become a rising phenomenon among prominent companies, notably for the Christmas season.

  • Another beverage giant has also launched back-to-back AI-generated Christmas ads.
  • Technical Challenges: Because segments produced with generative AI are susceptible to distort the longer they run, most AI video outputs tend to be roughly short in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also provoked fears about automation in the production sector, with some commenters stating it could affect opportunities for production staff.

Response from the Production Company

After the ad being taken down, a producer's head, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the advert.

She stated, the development took "seven weeks" and involved producing "numerous versions" which were then crafted in post-production "just as we would on any standard production".

"This was not an AI trick," Bridge asserted. "It was a proper commercial."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's ad was largely panned, the reception for some AI-assisted holiday ads has been divisive.

For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday ad from Coca-Cola reportedly garnered a 61% "favorable response" from online commenters.

However, various brands have likewise faced scrutiny for using the technique in their campaigns. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for advertisements that critics called "cheap" and "disturbing".

The episode highlights the evolving debate within the marketing and creative sectors about the balance between AI efficiency and audience reception.
